Restoration of St. Nicholas Church, Islip, Northamptonshire, 1854. 'The Church has been reseated with...oak. The stone work to the arcades and windows has been repaired, and the walls re-plastered. The tower arch has been thrown open...and a new belfry floor constructed. A new carved oak pulpit has also been set up...At the back of the altar is a reredos, of Caen stone...underneath are Minton's ornamental tiles. The brass standards for lighting the Church and the lectern are by Messrs. Hardman, of Birmingham. A stained glass window has been placed in the tower...designed from old fragments found in one of the windows of the south aisle, and...executed by Messrs. Powell, of Whitefriars...The works have been carried out under the superintendence, and from the designs, of Mr. W. Slater, architect, of New Adelphi-chambers, London; and executed by Mr. Whiting, builder, of Northampton'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854.
