The late Lord Frederick Fitzclarence - from a daguerreotype by Claudet, 1854. Portrait of the illegitimate son of King William IV: '...Commander-in-Chief at Bombay [Mumbai, India], and Colonel of the 36th Regiment...Although he had never seen active service, Lord Frederick Fifzclarence always took a warm interest in his profession; and by his military administration largely benefited the Portsmouth district and the Bombay Presidency...[he] was distinguished through life for his frank and generous disposition. In his youth he was remarkable for his tender and affectionate attention to his mother...he devoted himself with much earnestness to the moral and intellectual improvement of the troops, he himself delivering lectures for their instruction as an example to the officers under him...the officers of her Majesty's and the Honourable [East India] Company's army will wear mourning for a fortnight...From "Illustrated London News", 1854.
