Woman suffrage banners, between 1916 and 1918. First World War: woman pointing at banners reading: 'Kaiser [Woodrow] Wilson, have you forgotten your sympathy with the poor Germans because they were not self-governed? 20,000,000 American women are not self-governed. Take the beam out of your eye'. 'Mr President, what did you mean when you said in 1916 to a woman suffrage convention, shortly before the national election: "I will fight with you. The tide is rising to meet the Moon"?'. Note pile of banners and poles for demonstrations. Women in the United States gained the legal right to vote in 1920, with the passing of the 19th Amendment.
