[Literary critic, writer, editor, and teacher Bliss Perry giving a speech at the unveiling of the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Memorial in Washington D.C. The bronze statue was designed by William Couper and Thomas Ball. On the dais, decorated with flags and greenery, is a plaque with lines from 'The Ship of State', one of Longfellow's poems: 'Thou, too, sail on, O Ship of State! Sail on, O UNION, strong and great! Humanity with all its fears, With all the hopes of future years, Is hanging breathless on thy fate!'].
