Columbus Memorial. Parade At Unveiling, 1912. [The Columbus Fountain, also known as the Columbus Memorial, was unveiled in Washington, D.C. in 1912. It was designed by Lorado Taft. Shown here is a tableau vivant on a carnival float pulled by horses, which formed part of the unveiling celebrations. The scene is the 'Departure of (Christopher) Columbus' from Spain for the New World. He is portrayed - wearing velvet - in a rowing boat. Behind is Union Station, with the inscription: 'He that would bring home the wealth of the Indies must carry the wealth of the Indies with him. So it is in travelling. A man must carry knowledge with him if he would bring home knowledge'].
