First World War: Johann Heinrich von Bernstorff (right), was German ambassador to the United States from 1908 to 1917. He left the US on 3 February 1917, after President Woodrow Wilson severed diplomatic relations with Germany. At left is Austrian diplomat Julius Ferdinand Zwiedinek, Freiherr von Südenhorst.
