Lucy Burns led the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage (CUWS), was active in the National American Women Suffrage Association, and helped form the National Woman's Party. By 1913, Mrs Pankhurst, founder of the Women's Social and Political Union, had already served three prison sentences for her efforts to gain the vote for women.
