Les quarante martyrs de Sébaste, 4th century CE?. The Forty Martyrs of Sebaste. The Holy Forty stand barefoot on the ice. One of them collapses in the arms of his neighbours. Above is Christ and forty crowns. The martyrs were a group of Roman soldiers in the Legio XII Fulminata (Armed with Lightning) who were martyred in 320 CE for the Christian faith.
