Childs Restaurant, Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC, 1917. First World War: bystanders watch military outriders escorting cortege of official cars. The rear car has US and German flags. Johann Heinrich von Bernstorff, German ambassador to the United States, left the US on 3 February 1917, after President Woodrow Wilson severed diplomatic relations with Germany. Childs Restaurants was one of the first national dining chains in the US and Canada. On the right are Pressler Bros. Haberdashers, and the offices of Gray Line Sightseeing Tours.
