Black Empire, Los Angeles, 1936. 'Now! "Black Empire" - Federal - Mayan Theatre'. Stage show about Franþois-Dominique Toussaint Louverture, leader of the Haitian Revolution. The Federal Theatre Project, created by the US Works Progress Administration in 1935, was designed to conserve and develop the skills of theatre workers, re-employ them on public relief, and to bring theatre to thousands in the United States who had never before seen live theatrical performances.
