'Appearances dey seems to be against me, or I must hab done it in ma sleep', 1901. 'Sung with Great Success by Clarence Powell; words by Ed. Gardenier, music by Charles Kohlman'. Song by Clarence Powell: an African American is caught stealing chickens by a white farmer. Black performers were forced to conform to the racist stereotypes expected by white audiences. From a collection of sheet music, some examples of which depict African Americans in a derogatory way. Other examples are songs by white musicians purporting to be black.
