Letter from an African-American man (Van Smith), 1883. 'U.S Coast & Geodetic Survey, Backe navy yard steamer Brooklyn N.Y. July 3 1882. My Dear Brother, i take the plasure to enform you a few lines and hoping when these few lines [you?] recieve that they may find you well as they leave me the same Dear Brother. We arive hear on the 26 of June and we will be hear until august and then we will go to New London Conn[ecticut] so i hope that you will let me hear from you soon and all so the family give my love to [?] and the babie kiss Lucy for me i will come to see you this winter shour...'.
