Doctor's certificate on death of slave Laurens while in the service of Confederate States building fortifications on James Island, South Carolina, 1863-03-25. 'This is to certify that Laurens (18 or 20 years of age) the slave of S. Warren Nelson, died on the tenth of June 1862 of Congestive fever, while employed by the Confed[erate] States on fortifications on Jas. Isld. S.C. [signature illegible], Physician in ch[arge] of Negroes, E. Div. Jas. Isld. S.C.'. The slave-owner, Warren Nelson, petitioned for compensation for Laurens who had been valued at $2000.
