One of the Evils of Slavery, 1940. 'A condition detrimental to the slave was no ideal home life. The children were deprived of the contact with their father. This is explained in the following paragraph entitled "A Disadvantage". One disadvantage to the slaves of this tendency under discussion was that it led to much inbreeding on the plantations. The owners encouraged their slaves to marry within the group of slaves owned by themselves where possible, because they knew that if a man married a wife who belonged to another master there would inevitably arise problems growing out of the desire of these married parties to spend as much time with each other as possible. This difficulty often led slave owners to buy additional servants which they did not really need or desire, in order that a wife or husband of a favorite slave...'.
