I. Garland Penn, 1897. African-American educator, writer and journalist Irvine Garland Penn was a lay leader in the Methodist Episcopal church. He was co-author with Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, and Ferdinand Lee Barnett of 'The Reason Why the Colored American Is Not in the World's Columbia Exposition' [1893]. From 'The white side of a black subject, enlarged and brought down to date; a vindication of the Afro-American race; from the landing of slaves at St. Augustine, Florida, in 1565, to the present time'.
