African American businessman, newspaper editor, civil rights activist, and politician: founded and served as president of the Mechanics Savings Bank; editor of the Richmond Planet newspaper; published articles in favour of racial equality; organised a black boycott of the segregated trolley system in Richmond, Virginia.
