Great Gate, Victoria Tower, leading to the Royal Court, 1856. Rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament in London. 'The new gate, or door...is a fine bold piece of design; it is composed of solid oak, the panels being of pierced metal, consisting of the Royal badges and the arms of Westminster within quatrefoils of the same metal. The hinges, which are very massive, to sustain the ponderous framework, are of pure gun-metal. The position of this gate is at the archway leading to the Royal Court, immediately opposite the entrance to the Victoria Tower - to the vast vaulted opening of which it adds its modicum of richness'.
