The Great Naval Review: "No Beds" - drawn by Phiz, 1856. Crowds flock to the Hampshire coast for a display by the Royal Navy. 'The masses of people of every class which had assembled in Portsmouth had begun early to throng the places where the best view could be gained of the scene. Those who had slept soundly in the various beds furnished by the inhabitants of Portsmouth and the surrounding places; those who had slept less comfortably on chairs and tables at the rate of ten shillings each; those who had not slept at all - and they were the majority - streamed out of Portsmouth towards Southsea Common on the one hand and Gosport Common the other'.
