'The royal swords are thus named: Curtana, or the Sword of Mercy, sheathed; the Sword of Justice to the Spirituality, which is obtuse; the Sword of Justice to the Temporality, which is sharp at the point; and the Sword of State. Of these, the last alone is used in the Coronation, being that with which the Sovereign is girded after the anointing. The others are borne in the procession by certain great officers-of-State'.
