Margaret Monument, New Orleans, c.between 1890 and 1901. The Margaret Haughery Statue commemorates philanthropist Margaret Haughery (1813-1882). Known as 'the mother of the orphans', she devoted her life's work to the care and feeding of the poor and hungry of New Orleans, and to the funding and construction of orphanages throughout the city. Statue designed by Alexander Doyle and dedicated in 1884, one of the first memorials in the USA dedicated to a woman
