The Waldorf-Astoria, New York, c1900. Two hotels side-by-side: the Waldorf Hotel opened in 1893, and the Astoria opened in 1897. They were merged into the Waldorf-Astoria, connected by a 300 metres (980 ft) long corridor, known as 'Peacock Alley'. The merger gave the joint hotel 1,300 bedrooms, making it the largest hotel in the world at the time. The Waldorf-Astoria was demolished in 1929 to make way for construction of the Empire State Building.
