Allegory of Peace, 1652. Alternative title: Triumph of Peace. Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, crowns Pax, the goddess of peace - allegory alluding to the 1648 Treaty of Münster. The treaty marked the formal recognition of the independent Dutch Republic, and the end of the Thirty Years' War and the Eighty Years' War. The figure in chains under the feet of Pax is Mars, the god of war.
