Johanna and the Jewish merchants, 1741. Alternative title: Act III, scene V from the comedy "De Spilpenning of de verkwistende vrouw" (The Spillpenning or the spendthrift woman) by Thomas Asselijn. Johanna's husband Gerardus and her father Augustijn have dressed up as Polish merchants (smousen) in order to trick her. The room is full of Chinese porcelain, statuettes and other curios. On the floor are shoes, a corset, and lengths of cloth. On the left a lemur plays with lace.
