The War in China - Victoria Hong-Kong: Queen's-Road West, 1857. 'The interest attached to the town of Victoria, the capital of Hong-Kong, and the seat of the Colonial Government, has induced us to engrave the accompanying View of a principal street, from an original Sketch...Here the picturesqueness of the large Chinese building in the foreground, with its open bazaars, contrasts strangely with the plainness of the colonial structures beyond it. The labouring classes and small traders are chiefly Chinese, who are ever on the alert for gain. The bazaars invite the passing stranger in every street, and the itinerant artisans go busily tramping in their daily rounds. There are many striking figures among them, as our Artist has shown'.
