View on a Cocoa Plantation in the Island of Granada, 1857. '...a very flourishing estate in the Island of Granada...situated on the side of a lofty mountain, in the parish of St, John, in the Gouyave district...The rows of trees which divide the estate...are planted for the purpose of affording shelter from the wind, which is very injurious to the young cocoa...The cocoa is usually planted in rows with a coffee-plant between them, allowing sufficient space for a free circulation of air and light...On this estate the land was divided into regular allotments, for which the labourer [a formerly enslaved person] paid a moderate rent...He was furnished with young plants of cocoa and coffee...The cocoa and coffee so prepared were shipped to England, and the labourer received his equal share of the profits arising from the sale...'.
