Replacing the Statue of Napoleon I. on the Vendome Column, Paris, 1876. The original column was started in 1806 at Napoleon's direction and completed in 1810. It was modelled after Trajan's Column. During the Paris Commune in 1871, the painter Gustave Courbet...proposed that the column be disassembled. The statue was removed. The column was repaired and re-erected in 1875.
