'The beast charged right on to the line of elephants to within a few feet of Major-General Probyn, receiving fire from the howdahs as it went, and rolling over on the grass in its dying agonies. A cautious approach was made by the shikarees, who moved the grass aside and peered about; but it was all over. A splendid male tiger, 10 ft. long, beautifully marked, lay stone dead, shot through the back of the neck and head...I confess that but for the cruel nature of the beast, which is the type of ferocity and cruelty in the animal kingdom, I could feel something like compassion for the beautiful creature which was laid out on the sward in the perfection of symmetry and strength, slain, but not conquered by man'.
