The late F. Freiligrath, 1876. Engraving from a photograph by the London Stereoscopic Company of a '...popular German poet [whose] earliest published poems bear the date of 1826, when he was no more than sixteen years of age...The characteristic works of this poet...appeared in the interval between the two French revolutions of 1830 and 1848, when Germany was moved most powerfully by French ideas...After the events of 1848 forced him into exile he lived many years in England, and became thoroughly acquainted with the English language. He was fond of its literature, and did a great deal to introduce its recent productions into Germany. During the last two years he edited a magazine at Stutgardt; but much of his life was spent in a banker's or merchant's counting-house'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876.
