'Professor of Military Hygiene at the Army Medical School, Netley Hospital [near Southampton]...most of his work was in connection with the Army, in which he served in India and Burmah from 1842 to 1845, and in the Crimean War as superintendent of the hospital at Renkioi, on the Dardanelles. He was the author of a valuable book on "Practical Hygiene,"...He was examiner of the candidates for the Army, Indian, and Naval medical services; and for a time one of the examiners in medicine for the University of London. In 1871 he made, with Dr. Burdon Sanderson, a most useful report on the sanitary state of Liverpool'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876.
