Mr. R. H. Dana, 1876. 'The Senate of the United States has rejected, for party or personal reasons, President Grant's appointment of this gentleman...as American Minister in London...At the age of nineteen, Mr. R. H. Dana, being compelled to relinquish his studies at Harvard in consequence of the failure of his eyesight, went to sea in a merchant-vessel as a common sailor. Upon his return he wrote and published a very graphic description of his voyages in the well-known book entitled "Two Years Before the Mast." His sight being completely restored, he resumed his studies, graduated with honours in 1837, and was admitted to the Bar in 1840. In the next year he published a treatise on seamanship, known in England, where it was reprinted, as "The Seaman's Manual."...Mr. Dana, like other Free-soilers, became an adherent of the Republican party in 1854'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876.
