Sketches at the Oxford and Cambridge Boat-Race, 1876. Annual rowing race on the River Thames in London. 'The Crews Returning; Off Chiswick Eyot; Clearing the Course. Each crew is nearly three stone heavier than those of last year, and we remark that in the Oxford boat the stroke side is more than two stone heavier than the bow; while the Cambridge men are pretty equally balanced. Last season stroke and bow side in the Oxford boat were within 7 lb. of each other, while there was a great preponderance of weight on the stroke side in the "light blue" ship...The "aquatic tournament," as the race is absurdly termed, was duly contested last Saturday, and...the best men won. The weather was supremely brilliant, the attendance was phenomenally large, and the entire affair seemed to have been as sparkling a performance as in days gone by...'.
