Sketches in Philadelphia, by our special artists, 1876. 'The Office of the Servants in a large Hotel - Artistic Admiration for an Artist; Old Beggar Woman; "The best Dinner in the City for 25 cents" - Waiting for Customers; At the Park - Restrictions to Freedom: "All Persons are Forbid Trespassing on the Grass, Smoking or Letting Dogs Run at Large in the Square - Penalty $5.00"...The wearied occupants of a seat in the Park, where smoking and lounging on the grass are strictly forbidden, and where they must soon be terribly fatigued by walking on the gravel paths under a glaring summer sun, have not the air of enjoying their recreation. A humorous observation of popular manners, especially those of domestics of the negro race, has produced the sketches which appear on the same page'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876.
