Celebration of the Laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable at New York - the Illumination of the City Hall, 1858. Firework display, with inscription: 'All Honour to Cyrus [?] Field'. American businessman and financier Cyrus West Field created the Atlantic Telegraph Company and laid the first telegraph cable across the Atlantic Ocean in 1858. The connection between North America and Europe was celebrated by an exchange of messages between Queen Victoria of England and President Buchanan of the United States using the new cable line.
