Fighting Orchids, 1917. Janus de Winter raised a furore around 1916 with depictions of his own feelings - 'sensations' - as abstractions. He transformed moods into visionary images for which recognisable motifs were stylised and adapted. His art impressed Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931), founder of De Stijl, who briefly attempted to make abstract art in the manner of De Winter.
