View of Bethlem Royal Hospital in London, 1747. 'L'Hospital de Fou', (mad hospital). Founded in 1247, Bethlem, or Bedlam, was originally a centre for the collection of alms to support the Crusader Church and to link England to the Holy Land. It became a notorious insane asylum, and is now a psyciatric hospital.
