Allegory of the Catholic Church: Plenary Indulgences (Indulgences plénières), c.1790. A monumental staircase, flanked by buildings, chapels carved from the rock, and an aqueduct leading to a church. At left a procession of hooded penitents carrying a religious statue, priests and other clergymen climb the stairs. In the right foreground is a stable with donkeys, cows, goats and pigs. In the centre is a column with a cross and inscription. A horse rolls on the ground in front of it.
