He was also known as the Whitechapel Murderer and Leather Apron, and was never caught. The Ripper preyed on women working as prostitutes - their throats were cut prior to abdominal mutilations. Numerous letters were received by media outlets and Scotland Yard from individuals purporting to be the murderer.
