AI IMAGE - Portrait of Malcolm X, 1960s, (2023). Malcolm X (1925-1965) was an African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist who was a prominent figure during the civil rights movement. A spokesman for the Nation of Islam until 1964, he was a vocal advocate for Black empowerment and the promotion of Islam within the Black community. On 21 February 1965, Malcolm X was preparing to address the Organization of Afro-American Unity in New York when a man shot him once in the chest with a sawn-off shotgun. Three members of the Nation of Islam were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
