This is a painting of the kitchen in the house he rented with his family for many summers in the 1880s. The house was later rented by the artist couple Krøyer and then by the artist Laurits Tuxen. The woman is Johansen’s wife, Martha who often appears, along with their children, in the painter’s serene, intimate pictorial world. Martha Johansen was also an artist.
