The Prince of Wales landing at St. John, New Brunswick, [Canada], - from a drawing by our special artist G. H. Andrews, 1860. 'His Royal Highness [future King Edward VII] reached the harbour of St. John late on the evening of Thursday, the 2nd August, the cannons on Partridge Island bearing the signal of the joyful tidings. An immense crowd of people, eager spectators, assembled at the wharf called Reed's Point to witness the arrival of the steamer, which was greeted with prolonged and enthusiastic cheering. At ten o'clock the following morning the Prince and suite disembarked from the Styx, amidst the roar and thunder of artillery; and was received on landing by his Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor, the Mayor, and Corporation, and escorted to his residence at Chipman House (formerly the abode of the late Chief Justice Chipman) by a grand procession, composed of the Executive Council, both Houses of the Legislature, the civic magistrates, and the different societies and trades'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860.
