Searching Neapolitan prisoners at St. Angelo - from a sketch by our special artist, Frank Vizetelly, 1860. War in Italy. 'A party of prisoners taken by Bixio's division in the engagement of the 1st October were recognised as belonging to the Neapolitan troops who some days previously had committed all kinds of atrocities at Cajazzo, which place was sacked. Bixio gave orders to have them searched, and that all those who had plunder on them should be shot. From some were taken earrings with flesh still hanging to them; others had ornaments taken from the altar of the church; and several were swathed about the body, beneath their great-coats, with breadths of silk. The Engraving...represents the unswathing of one of these wretches; and on the ground in front of him are some articles of ill-gotten booty taken from him and others'.
