Book of Hours, early 16th century. Crucifixion scene. Jean Pichore, to whom this work is attributed, was one of many versatile artists who did not see the print revolution as a threat to their work as manuscript illuminators but rather embraced the opportunity to expand their skills. Pichore was an admired and highly sought-after artist whose deftness with a brush, demonstrated here, was equalled by his sense of design for the printed page.
