Elephant Asleep, c1850s-1860s. An Asian elephant, perhaps the one that arrived at the Jardin des Plantes in 1843, lies asleep in a small clearing in the Forest of Fontainebleau. Hints of red and yellow in the right background suggest that it is evening.
