The Disaster to the Great Eastern: state of her Grand Saloon during the gale, 1861. Engraving based on a sketch drawn by a passenger on board the 'Great Eastern' during the treacherous crossing of the Atlantic in September 1861. After leaving Liverpool she ran into bad weather off south west Ireland and the rudder was snapped. Makeshift repairs eventually made it possible to return to Queenstown several days later. From "Illustrated London News", 1861.
