In 1829 Wilhelm I, Emperor of Germany, King of Prussia, '...succeeded his elder brother, Frederick William IV., in the present year, after having, as is well known, exercised the functions of the Government of the kingdom as Regent for some time previously - that is, from Oct. 9, 1858...he is now in his sixty-fourth year. Before he was called on to take the conduct of the affairs of his brother's kingdom he filled the posts of Military Governor of Rhenish Prussia and the King's Lieutenant in Pomerania. Until the time when he became Regent he observed a scrupulous abstinence from all uninvited interference with the affairs of the general Government, but manifested very decided sentiments whenever his opinions were invited by the King...His Majesty was married on the 11th of June, 1829, to the Princess Marie Louise Auguste Catherine...They were crowned on 18 October 1861].
