The Abbey Church of Waltham Holy Cross: the new East End, 1861. 'The history of the celebrated Abbey of Waltham [in Essex] is now so well known, and so many persons have visited the remains of Harold's Church since the repairs were commenced, that at present we need refer only to the new east end, which is being rapidly completed. As the architecture of the early half of the thirteenth century is now universally considered the best, the east windows have been built in that style, and they are being filled with the best stained glass that can be obtained...Several of the parishioners have advanced, and some have given, considerable amounts for the purpose of at once completing this part of the work; it is, therefore, confidently expected that voluntary contributions from all quarters will soon furnish the required funds (about £700), in order to respond to the liberality which has been manifested. E. B. Jones, Esq., designed and executed the cartoons for the windows, which have been supplied by Messrs. Powell, of Whitefriars; W. Burges, Esq., being the architect. The whole work is considered by able judges to be of the very best description, and the designs, as well as the execution, are much admired'. From "Illustrated London News", 1861.
