The Coronation of the King and Queen of Prussia: the royal visit to Danzic [Gdansk] - Their Majesties passing the Long Market - from a sketch by our special artists, 1861. '... the Royal party, in three or four carriages, entered the town...The cheers were deafening. Surrounding the King's carriage, riding in front, in the rear, at the sides - in fact, everywhere - was the Guild of the Butchers, whose privilege it is...[to] sally forth foremost for the reception of the Prussian Sovereigns. The Dantzic Rifles, preceded by their band and dressed in green coats and black jäger hats with green feathers; the various guilds, with their bands and banners and high poles, displaying the emblems of then various trades, marched in due order after the Royal carriages...In the centre of the [city] is a broad street, with a gate tower at each end of it...About halfway down the street, equidistant from the two gate towers, stands the Mansion House or Rathhouse, distinguished by a high and slender tower of most beautiful proportions and most delicate outlines. This street, flanked on each side by the highest houses in Dantzic...was one blaze of light...The blaze of the Long Market of Dantzic eclipsed all the candles and lamps of Konigsberg'.
