Little Red Riding Hood, 1861. Children with a toy theatre. Illustration to rhyming play: 'Enter the Wolf. "I don't know what's the cause, but I am ailing; I'm nervous, and my appetite is failing. At breakfast I could eat but one poor kid; At lunch two little lambs were all I did: And what to have for dinner? - that's the question; It must be something easy of digestion. There's an old goose I know of, but she's tough; Besides, one goose would scarcely be enough. Ah! What is that? (Sniffs.) 'Tis something very sweet! Little Red Riding Hood? There is a treat!"...[Red Riding Hood appears]. Wolf (aside), My nose was right. [Comes forward]. "Good day, my pretty maid!" Red Riding Hood: "O dear, Sir! Who are you?" Wolf. "Don't be afraid! I'm Squire Wolf, the owner of this wood".'. From "Illustrated London News", 1861.
