The Peninsular and Oriental Company's ship Candia under repair on the Atakah Reef, 1862. The steamship, which had suffered a fractured propeller shaft in the Red Sea, was beached on the Atakah Reef, in the Gulf of Suez to enable repairs to be made. The reef was used as there were no docks nearby. The lifting of the ship on to the reef was a very complex technical operation, but was carried out successfully. From "Illustrated London News", 1862.
