His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt, 1862. Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, married Princess Alice, a daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, on 1 July 1862. '...we know that Prince Louis of Hesse was the deliberate choice of [Albert] the Prince Consort; and on his judgment in the selection of a husband for his child, as in most other things, this country reposes the utmost confidence. We therefore accept personally the stranger amongst us, readily and cheerfully, upon the faith of him who chose and approved of him as one who was to have held the nearest and most delicate relations towards him'.
